Over 150 millions people faced acute food shortages

A group of international organizations says at least 155 million people globally faced crisis or worse levels of food insecurity last year. The figure rose by around 20 million from the previous year.

An international alliance that includes the World Food Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization issued the 2021 Global Report on Food Crises on Wednesday.

The report says over 103 million, or 66 percent, were in 10 countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Yemen, Afghanistan and Syria. It cites conflicts as the main driver behind the rising food insecurity.

It predicts that this year, the ongoing pandemic will have a more serious economic impact, with many households facing lower incomes.

FAO Emergency and Resilience Division Director Dominique Burgeon, said, "To prevent widespread famine from breaking out in 2021, humanitarian action is needed now to save lives and save livelihoods on a massive scale."
